for an International Insurance Company

Their problems came down to three things: cost, consistency, and presentation.

Cost was the most immediate pain point. Because neither the insurance company nor their previous project managers could read Korean, no one was catching duplicate uploads. Clients would submit the same file two or three times (in one case we heard about, 10 times!), and the translation company, billing purely by word count, would simply translate it again and charge full price. On top of that, many documents shared nearly identical content across pages, differing only by a date or page number, and those were billed at full rate too. The client had no way to push back because they couldn't verify what they were actually getting.

비용이 가장 즉각적인 고충이었습니다. 이 보험사도, 이전 프로젝트 매니저들도 한국어를 읽을 수 없었기 때문에 아무도 중복 업로드 건을 발견하지 못했습니다. 고객들은 같은 파일을 두세 번 (심지어 어떤 경우는 10번씩) 제출하곤 했으며, 번역 회사는 단어 수를 기준으로 비용을 산정하기 때문에 동일한 파일도 다시 처음부터 번역하여 전체 비용을 청구하는 상황이었습니다. 게다가, 여러 문서들은 날짜나 페이지 번호만 다를 뿐 거의 동일한 내용을 담고 있었는데도, 전부 전액으로 비용이 청구되었습니다. 보험사는 이를 직접 검증할 수 없었기 때문에, 이의를 제기할 수 없었습니다.

Consistency was the subtler problem, but arguably the more damaging one. Korean medical terminology draws heavily from Chinese, and records frequently mix Korean and English within the same document. Without a translator who truly understood the subject matter, terminology shifted between documents, grammar was awkward, and the translations required extra review just to make sense of. In insurance, an inconsistently translated medical record isn't just inconvenient — it can affect decisions.

일관성 부족은 미묘한 문제였지만, 어쩌면 더 큰 피해를 초래했을지도 모릅니다. 한국 의학 용어들은 대부분 한자어 기반이며, 의료 기록에는 한국어와 영어가 혼용하여 기재되곤 합니다. 해당 전문 지식이 없는 번역가가 작업했을 시, 문서 간 용어가 일관되지 않고, 번역이 매끄럽지 않아 추가 검토가 필요했을 것입니다. 이처럼 일관성 없이 번역된 의료 기록은 보험금 지급 결정에 직접적 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.

Presentation was another problem. Rushed turnaround times meant formatting was treated as an afterthought. Even when the translation itself was acceptable, poorly reproduced layouts made the documents difficult to use. Tables were broken, structure was lost, and the end product didn't reflect the source.

프레젠테이션도 또 다른 문제였습니다. 촉박한 마감 기한 때문에 문서 서식 설정은 뒷전으로 밀려났습니다. 기존 번역물들은 번역 자체는 괜찮았을지라도, 배치가 제대로 되지 않아 문서로 사용하기 어려웠습니다. 표가 깨지고, 구조가 다 틀어져서, 결과물이 원본과 너무 달라졌습니다.

We addressed all three.

On cost, we introduced a billing structure that charged only once per unique file, and bundled near-identical pages rather than billing them separately. Formatting was included in the base price, not treated as an add-on. Our internal standard is that a translated document should mirror the Korean source as closely as possible, so the client always knows what they're getting. As our familiarity with their documents grew, we also became better at catching duplicates before the project even started. Over time, their average invoice actually went down.

On consistency, we assigned a dedicated team with subject-matter expertise in Korean medical and insurance documents. Consistent terminology, consistent style, and a review process that specifically addresses the Korean-English mixing common in medical records. When creative solutions were needed to make something readable in English without losing the original meaning, we flagged them transparently rather than just guessing.

On presentation, formatting became a core part of our workflow, not a final step. Every document we return is structured to be immediately usable.
