Many Koreans have been adopted and have emigrated abroad to Canada, the United States, and throughout Europe.
In this process, they have often lost their language ability and experienced a disconnection from their culture and biological ancestors. Over the past 10–15 years, we have seen a steadily increasing demand for the translation of Korean adoption documents.
What makes these documents unique is that they often contain Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), handwriting, and sometimes even Japanese characters — requiring a specialist with a broad linguistic background to interpret them accurately. In particular, documents prepared before 1970 were written vertically (and with a mixture of Korean and Chinese characters). Between 1970 to the early 1990s, documents were prepared using typewriters. Each era posed different challenges in terms of completing the translation. In some cases, Korean adoption agencies offered their own English translations. However, they often missed the mark in terms of accuracy, and often skipped over any difficult-to-translate content completely.
